Burne-Jones: The Star of Bethlehem (detail)

Madeleine L'Engle is a serious Christian theologian. But if you're not Christian, don't let those words scare you away. As a pagan, I have found so much of value in her spiritual writings that I consider her one of my most respected teachers. Non-dogmatic, respectful of other points of view, L'Engle believes that Christianity is a faith of compassion and joy, not persecution and condemnation. She is a lifelong Episcopalian, and has had a long association with the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, of which she has written in her fictional works. Her theological writings, like the rest of her work, encompass science, literature and personal experience. When I made my tarot deck, I knew that the Star card would be a tribute to Madeleine L'Engle, for whom each sparrow, each soul, each star sings of the joy that is all creation.
